Planning on cycling or spending the day at Champoeg State Park? Then plan to stop by the small community of Butteville, where an old local favorite has gotten a facelift. Just outside of Yamhill County across the Willamette River nine miles from Newberg, the historic Butteville Store opened its doors this April for a summer of new management, menus and music.
Established in 1863, the Butteville Store is the oldest continuously operating retail establishment in the State of Oregon. While the building has undergone many iterations over the decades including stints as a saloon, art gallery, gas stations, store and community center, it is currently owned by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department. Located half a mile from the east end of the hiking trail at Champoeg State Park, the store has become a common snack stop for bikers, hikers and campers. Now, visitors can look forward to more than just granola bars.
New manager and chef Dori Brattain is bringing a new feel to the Butteville Store with more speacialty foods and full-meal options. The augmented menu includes house-baked pastries, salads and soups, deli sandwiches, and classic summer barbeque as well as the store’s traditional hand-dipped ice cream and homemade desserts.
“Dori brings a new menu and level of service,” said Ben Williams of the nonprofit Friends of Butteville. “Additionally, we’ve added a small performance stage and the store is now French Prairie’s acoustic music venue.” (French Prairie refers to the mid-Willamette region around Champoeg and the town of St. Paul.)
In addition to breakfast and lunch options, the Butteville Store has also introduced weekly dinner and live music events, transforming the store into an old-time music hall every Saturday night. Old wooden tables and chairs surround the dining room stage that has recently been outfitted with a new Bose sound system to accommodate intimate concerts from local bluegrass and Celtic bands. Saturday dinners include three courses for $20 and a new beer and wine bar serving wines from local vineyards. Extended live music events are scheduled for Friday through Sunday on Labor Day weekend, and a special music venue on August 21, Eclipse Day.
